OpenAI and Sur Energy to Build US$25 Billion AI Data Centre in Patagonia

OpenAI and Argentine company Sur Energy have signed a letter of intent to develop a massive artificial intelligence data centre in Patagonia, marking what could become the first “Stargate” project in Latin America. The proposed initiative represents an estimated US$25 billion investment and would be structured as a joint venture involving global cloud infrastructure partners, with OpenAI serving as the main buyer of computing capacity. The project, announced by Argentina’s government following meetings with President Javier Milei and OpenAI executives, is expected to be developed under Argentina’s RIGI investment incentive framework, which offers long-term tax and customs benefits to attract large-scale foreign investment. The planned facility could reach a computing capacity of up to 500 MW, designed to support next-generation AI systems. Officials say the data centre would leverage Argentina’s renewable energy potential while generating jobs and attracting further technology investment. The initiative also includes plans to expand AI adoption across government services through OpenAI’s public-sector programs. If completed, it would position Argentina as a major AI infrastructure hub in Latin America.
