DRC Highlights Artificial Intelligence as a Driver of Economic Transformation

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), with Marie-Thérèse Sombo describing it as a strategic tool capable of accelerating innovation and reshaping economies. Speaking at a panel during the Commission on Science and Technology for Development in Geneva, she noted that AI presents both a major challenge and a historic opportunity for developing nations. The minister highlighted key obstacles facing the country, including limited infrastructure, low connectivity, and a shortage of skilled professionals in AI and data science. Despite these challenges, the government—under the leadership of Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo—is taking steps to prepare for an AI-driven future. A national AI readiness report has already been adopted, while a comprehensive strategy is currently in development to guide responsible deployment and governance. In addition, new academic programs in AI will be launched at the University of Kinshasa and University of Lubumbashi. Plans are also underway to establish a national AI academy and research center, reinforcing the country’s ambition to position itself as a competitive player in the global digital economy.
