Australia’s music industry has introduced new rules excluding fully artificial intelligence generated songs from the country’s official music charts, following controversy surrounding an artificial intelligence assisted cover that gained significant attention. The Australian Recording Industry Association said wholly artificial intelligence generated tracks will no longer qualify for the ARIA Charts. However, recordings that use generative artificial intelligence as a supporting tool can remain eligible if they are substantially human made and do not raise concerns about streaming or chart manipulation. The decision comes as musicians, songwriters and producers call for stronger protections for creative work amid the rapid growth of artificial intelligence generated music. Industry representatives are also seeking licensing arrangements and greater recognition for artists whose work may be used to develop artificial intelligence systems. ARIA Chief Executive Officer Annabelle Herd said the charts should accurately represent the music Australians consume and should not reward unlicensed artificial intelligence output. The controversy intensified after Australian DJ Josh Fawaz’s cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” reached No. 4 on two ARIA charts and became one of the most played songs on Australian radio.
