Artificial intelligence is making job applications faster to create, but it may also be making them harder for recruiters to distinguish. A new World Economic Forum report highlights how employers are increasingly looking beyond applications as candidates use similar artificial intelligence tools to prepare CVs and cover letters. The report, written by Adele Jacquard and Oliver Humphries, suggests that referrals and personal recommendations could become more influential because they provide employers with signals that automated applications cannot easily replicate. Referred workers have also been associated with stronger retention, productivity and employment outcomes. At the same time, entry-level workers face growing pressure. Artificial intelligence exposed junior roles are increasingly demanding skills associated with more senior positions, while 43% of surveyed chief executives plan to reduce their focus on junior hiring. The report warns that greater reliance on personal networks could also increase inequality if access to opportunities depends heavily on existing connections.
