Uruguay and Microsoft have launched the AI for Good Lab, the first facility of its kind in South America, marking a significant step in the region’s growing use of artificial intelligence for public benefit. The initiative is a public-private partnership designed to accelerate the development of AI solutions focused on social impact, including public health, environmental protection, humanitarian response, and cultural preservation. The lab will operate within Uruguay’s Technological Laboratory (LATU) ecosystem and aligns with the country’s broader strategy to modernize state services through digital innovation. Officials describe the initiative as part of a national effort to position AI as a driver of productive development and institutional transformation. A key feature of the project is its emphasis on open innovation, with many solutions expected to be shared beyond Uruguay through open-access frameworks. This raises important questions around intellectual property, licensing, and long-term governance of publicly funded AI tools developed in collaboration with private companies.
