UNESCO Launches Regional AI in Education Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean

UNESCO has launched the Observatory on Artificial Intelligence in Education for Latin America and the Caribbean, a regional initiative aimed at guiding the ethical and effective use of AI in education systems. The platform was introduced in Santiago, Chile, during the 2026 Forum on Sustainable Development, bringing together governments, international organizations, academia, and the private sector. The Observatory will help countries integrate AI into teaching, learning, and education management while promoting equity, quality, and sustainable development. It also seeks to address a regional learning crisis, where six in ten sixth-grade students fail to meet basic reading and math standards, while AI adoption in classrooms continues to grow rapidly. Led by UNESCO and multiple regional partners, the initiative focuses on building evidence-based policies, strengthening teacher training, and ensuring responsible AI use. It aims to reduce educational gaps and ensure technology supports inclusive learning across the region.
