Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment is considering an investment of up to ¥1 trillion, or approximately $6.3 billion, to develop a major artificial intelligence data center in Japan, according to a person familiar with the matter. The proposed 500-megawatt facility would be built in Akita Prefecture and could become Japan’s largest data center once completed. The project may involve additional Japanese and international investors, while a consortium of Japanese companies is expected to oversee construction and related infrastructure. Total investment linked to the project, including spending by suppliers and companies establishing operations nearby, could reach ¥2 trillion. Japan is positioning regions such as Akita as priority investment zones for artificial intelligence data centers and semiconductor manufacturing, supported by government incentives. The potential investment highlights the UAE’s growing role in global artificial intelligence infrastructure. Mubadala is also a founding partner of MGX, an Abu Dhabi-backed investor focused on artificial intelligence and related infrastructure.
