Anthropic Reports $80.7 Billion Loss as Artificial Intelligence Spending Surges

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude artificial intelligence chatbot, reportedly recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion during the first half of 2026, a significant increase from the $13 billion loss reported in the same period last year. The figures come as the company prepares for a potential stock market listing that could value the artificial intelligence developer at up to $2 trillion.Anthropic said the increased losses largely reflected accounting adjustments linked to its financing agreements. However, the company is also facing rising expenses as it expands its computing infrastructure and develops advanced artificial intelligence models to compete with OpenAI and other industry players. The company spent nearly $9 billion on computing capacity and infrastructure during the first six months of 2026, exceeding its total spending in this area throughout 2025. Anthropic has also signed cloud computing agreements worth approximately $450 billion over the next seven to ten years, while its overall costs could reach $750 billion as further negotiations continue. Its commitments include $111 billion with Google Cloud, $110 billion with Amazon Web Services, $31 billion with Microsoft, and up to $86 billion for renting computing chips through Nscale and Lambda. Anthropic has also agreed to a contract exceeding $160 billion to lease Google chips through Broadcom. Despite its substantial losses and rising costs, Anthropic has reported rapid revenue growth. The company generated approximately $16.3 billion in revenue during the first half of 2026, compared with $1.1 billion in the same period last year. Its first-half revenue also exceeded the $4.6 billion recorded for the whole of 2025. According to a draft prospectus obtained by The Wall Street Journal, the company is preparing for a possible initial public offering next month. However, reports indicate that some investors are considering reducing its valuation expectations from $2 trillion to around $1.5 trillion, citing slower growth and increasing infrastructure expenditure. Anthropic also disclosed that two customers accounted for approximately one-fifth of its first-half revenue, highlighting its reliance on a limited number of major clients. Alongside its business expansion, Anthropic is considering donating 5 percent of its value to a public benefit fund. The proposed initiative would aim to address challenges associated with artificial intelligence, including potential job losses as businesses adopt the technology. The company’s financial position highlights the substantial costs involved in developing artificial intelligence systems, even as demand and revenue continue to grow.
