Spain pushes EU coordination over AI system “Mythos” amid banking security concerns

Spain has called for coordinated European action over the emerging risks posed by the advanced AI system “Mythos,” developed by Anthropic, which is raising concerns within the financial sector about cybersecurity vulnerabilities and systemic risk. During discussions at the Eurogroup, Spain’s Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo urged EU member states to avoid fragmented responses and instead adopt a unified strategy to manage access to frontier AI tools while protecting critical infrastructure. The issue has also been raised by the European Central Bank, led by Christine Lagarde, which has asked banks to assess risks linked to advanced AI models capable of identifying software vulnerabilities, including zero-day exploits. European policymakers are debating whether financial institutions should gain controlled access to such systems to strengthen defenses without increasing exposure. The Eurogroup is now examining a coordinated framework to balance innovation, cybersecurity, and financial stability as AI capabilities advance rapidly across global markets.
