South Korea has announced a new initiative to test artificial intelligence-based smart city technologies across five Southeast Asian countries under its 2026 K-City Network programme. The project, led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, aims to improve urban infrastructure while helping Korean tech companies expand globally. The pilot projects will be deployed in Brunei, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. They will focus on solving real-world urban challenges using AI-driven systems, including traffic management, disaster response, and infrastructure safety. In Brunei, an AI-powered water management and disaster response platform will be introduced. The Philippines will test a smart traffic system designed to reduce congestion through adaptive signal control. Vietnam will trial on-demand transport services and AI-based intersection management, while Thailand will implement a safety monitoring system for ageing buildings. Malaysia will focus on traffic monitoring to detect congestion and accidents in real time.
