Rwanda has become one of the first African countries to pilot artificial-intelligence-assisted clinical decision tools across primary healthcare facilities. The program is part of a broader initiative supported by the Gates Foundation and OpenAI aimed at improving healthcare systems in regions experiencing severe shortages of trained medical staff. The AI tools analyze patient symptoms, treatment protocols and clinical data in order to assist doctors in evaluating diagnoses and recommending treatment pathways. Rwanda’s healthcare system has invested heavily in digital infrastructure over the past decade, creating an environment where AI decision-support systems can be tested effectively. Officials emphasize that the technology is designed to assist medical professionals rather than replace them. If successful, the system could eventually be expanded across hundreds of clinics in Africa.
