Portugal has officially launched its National Artificial Intelligence Agenda (ANIA), a five-year strategy backed by an investment of more than €400 million (about US$466 million) for the period 2026–2030. The initiative, which came into effect on Friday, is largely funded through European resources and is described by the Ministry for State Reform as a strategic investment in the country’s digital future. The plan aims to strengthen Portugal’s position in artificial intelligence by supporting research, infrastructure development, and practical deployment across key sectors such as public services, healthcare, and industry. It also focuses on improving national AI capabilities, encouraging innovation, and ensuring responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies. Authorities say the agenda is designed to accelerate digital transformation while building long-term competitiveness in the European tech landscape. By combining public funding with EU support, Portugal hopes to expand its AI ecosystem, attract talent, and integrate advanced technologies into both government operations and the wider economy.
