Over 30% of Japanese Firms Now Use Generative AI in Business Operations, Survey Finds

A recent nationwide survey shows that generative artificial intelligence is becoming a common tool in Japan’s business sector, with more than 30% of companies already using it in daily operations. The study, conducted by The Yomiuri Shimbun and Teikoku Databank, found that 34.6% of surveyed firms actively use generative AI, while another 14.2% are considering adoption. Businesses most commonly apply AI for writing documents, summarizing information, proofreading, and generating ideas for planning, followed by information gathering tasks. Despite growing adoption, companies reported several concerns, particularly the accuracy of AI-generated information and a shortage of skilled personnel. Some firms also noted challenges such as uneven employee skills and over-reliance on AI tools, which can affect productivity and creativity. However, most respondents reported no major negative impacts so far. The findings highlight how Japanese companies are gradually integrating AI into routine work while still addressing risks related to reliability, workforce adaptation, and responsible use.
