Lidl is expanding the use of artificial intelligence in its Luxembourg stores through a new Scan & Go system designed to streamline shopping while collecting more detailed customer data. Integrated into the Lidl Plus smartphone app, the system allows customers to scan products as they shop, monitor their total spending in real time, and pay quickly at self-checkout stations. The most notable feature is the introduction of AI-enabled smart scales that use visual recognition to automatically identify fruits, vegetables, and frozen products, reducing one of the biggest friction points in self-service retail. The initiative reflects a broader transformation in European retail, where supermarkets are increasingly combining automation, data analytics, and mobile technology to improve efficiency and personalize promotions without fully eliminating human staff. While retailers such as Amazon and Carrefour have experimented with similar systems, Lidl’s approach represents a more gradual and cost-effective middle path between traditional staffed stores and fully autonomous shopping environments.
