A growing body of analysis highlights that artificial intelligence adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa is being constrained less by technology itself and more by basic infrastructure gaps, particularly unreliable electricity and limited internet access. Across many countries in the region, frequent power outages and low electrification rates make it difficult to sustain the continuous computing required for modern AI systems. Recent estimates suggest that hundreds of millions of people in Africa still lack reliable access to electricity, with rural communities being the most affected. This creates a structural barrier for AI tools that depend on stable power for servers, devices, and connectivity.
