Indonesia Turns to AI to Tackle Severe Urban Traffic Crisis Amid Rapid Vehicle Growth

Indonesia is increasingly adopting artificial intelligence to address worsening urban traffic congestion, driven by a vehicle population that has surged to 172.9 million units and continues to grow at 4.5% annually. With congestion levels reaching over 50% in major cities and economic losses estimated at tens of trillions of rupiah, officials and researchers from Universitas Gadjah Mada are advocating a shift toward AI-powered Intelligent Transportation Systems that can analyze real-time data, predict traffic flows, and optimize signal control. Technologies such as machine learning and large language models are being explored to create more adaptive and responsive traffic management systems, though challenges remain in digital infrastructure, data integration, cybersecurity, and regulatory readiness. Experts emphasize that while AI could significantly improve mobility efficiency and public transport systems, its success will depend on strong governance and reliable data frameworks to ensure safe and equitable deployment.
