Germany Expands Sovereign AI Data Infrastructure

Europe’s push for technological independence is accelerating with new investments in artificial-intelligence computing infrastructure. A German startup has announced plans to build a large AI-focused data center capable of delivering around 30 megawatts of compute capacity. Facilities of this scale are essential for training large machine-learning models, which require enormous amounts of processing power and energy. European policymakers have increasingly warned that the continent risks falling behind the United States and China in access to AI computing resources. As a result, governments and private companies are investing heavily in domestic data-center infrastructure to support research institutions and startups. The proposed German facility is part of a broader movement toward “sovereign AI,” a concept referring to the ability of countries or regions to develop and train AI systems using their own computing infrastructure rather than relying entirely on foreign technology platforms.
