French scholars use AI to revive imagined Molière play

Researchers and artists in France have collaborated to create an AI-assisted theatre production imagining what a lost work by playwright Molière might have looked like. The project, led by the Sorbonne University with support from creative group Obvious and using technology from Mistral AI, produced a three-act comedy titled The Astrologer, or False Omens. Trained on 17th-century texts and stylistic patterns, the AI generated dialogue in classical French, later refined by literature scholars and theatre specialists. The production, staged at the Royal Opera of Versailles, explores themes typical of Molière’s satire, such as human credulity and superstition. Researchers say the aim was not to replace historical authorship but to experiment with creative reconstruction using generative AI tools. The project highlights growing interest in combining cultural heritage with machine learning, while also raising questions about authenticity, artistic authorship, and the role of AI in interpreting historical literature for modern audiences.
