EU Leaders Reach Agreement to Amend AI Act with Revised Timelines and Rules

European Union leaders have reached a provisional political agreement to amend the EU AI Act, signaling major updates to the bloc’s artificial intelligence regulations. The revised plan extends enforcement deadlines for high-risk AI systems, pushing requirements to December 2027 for Annex III systems and August 2028 for Annex I systems, while also delaying watermarking and AI-generated content detection obligations to December 2026. The agreement introduces stricter bans on AI systems that generate non-consensual intimate content and adjusts registration rules for certain exempt systems, reducing reporting requirements. Although timelines are being relaxed, the overall structure and intent of the AI Act remain unchanged, and officials continue to urge organizations to prepare for compliance rather than delay planning.
