Ethiopia has launched a University Innovation Platform for Artificial Intelligence in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, aiming to strengthen local AI capacity and position the country as a regional hub for technology development. The initiative is designed to equip students and researchers with practical AI skills while supporting the transformation of academic ideas into scalable technological solutions and startups. The platform provides advanced infrastructure, specialized workstations, and structured training programs covering the full innovation cycle from development to prototyping. Officials say the project aligns with Ethiopia’s Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy and broader economic reforms focused on building a knowledge-based economy. At the launch, leaders emphasized that technological sovereignty now extends beyond physical borders to include data, algorithms, and computing infrastructure. The initiative reflects Ethiopia’s ambition to shift from being a technology consumer to a producer of AI-driven solutions, building stronger domestic innovation ecosystems and reducing reliance on external systems.
