Egypt Debuts Sovereign AI in Education as Debate Over Learning Impact Intensifies

Egypt has launched its first sovereign artificial intelligence systems, introducing a large language model called Karnak and an AI tutoring platform named Sia as part of a national push to integrate locally developed AI into education and public services. Developed under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the systems are designed to reflect Egypt’s language, history, and institutional knowledge while supporting students in subjects such as Arabic and history. The initiative is also intended to help citizens navigate government services more efficiently. In education, however, the rollout has sparked debate. Some educators warn that heavy reliance on AI tutoring could weaken students’ critical thinking skills and reduce engagement in traditional learning methods. Concerns include overdependence on automated answers, reduced motivation to learn independently, and challenges linked to infrastructure and digital access.
