Colombia has launched the third edition of its ColombIA Inteligente 2026 program, allocating around USD 6.47 million to support applied research and innovation projects in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, focuses on solving real territorial challenges while strengthening national scientific capacity. A key feature of the program is its mandatory collaboration model, requiring alliances between universities, companies, and local community organizations, including rural and indigenous groups, to ensure inclusive and practical outcomes. The funding covers areas such as AI-driven environmental protection, wildlife management, quantum computing, secure communications, and sustainable energy solutions. Colombia has already invested heavily in AI development, financing numerous research projects and advanced training programs through international and national partnerships. Alongside funding efforts, the country is also advancing its regulatory framework and national AI policy under CONPES 4144, which guides ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI development. Colombia is further investing in quantum research infrastructure, including plans for its first quantum computer, signaling a broader strategy to position itself as a regional leader in emerging technologies.
