Brazil Report Warns AI Deepfakes Pose “Excessive Risk” to Women and Girls

A new report from the Brazilian research institute InternetLab warns that AI-generated deepfakes are becoming an “excessive risk” that disproportionately targets women and girls, particularly through non-consensual sexual content. The analysis highlights findings from Security Hero showing that nearly all deepfake pornography online involves female victims, underscoring how existing gender inequalities are being amplified in digital spaces. The report notes that in Brazil and other parts of Latin America, schools have already seen cases where students use easily accessible AI tools to create and circulate explicit images of classmates, turning a technological issue into a real-world safety crisis. It calls for stronger regulation, including “safety-by-design” requirements, independent audits, and greater platform accountability to prevent abuse. The report also stresses that AI risks should not be seen as isolated technical flaws but as systemic issues tied to how digital platforms are built and monetized.
