Brazil Launches Multi-Billion-Dollar National Artificial Intelligence Plan

Brazil has intensified its national push into artificial intelligence with the implementation of the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA), a multi-year strategy designed to expand research capacity, computing infrastructure and industrial adoption of AI technologies. The plan allocates roughly 23 billion reais (about $4.4 billion) for AI development over several years, focusing on applications that address economic growth, environmental challenges and public services. Brazilian officials say the strategy is intended to position the country as a leading AI developer in Latin America while ensuring that AI technologies serve broader social goals such as education, healthcare and productivity improvements. Policymakers have emphasized the importance of building local data infrastructure and training domestic talent so that Brazil can compete globally in advanced digital technologies. The strategy also aligns with broader debates within Brazil’s Congress regarding regulation of AI systems and incentives to attract large data-center investments needed to support machine-learning infrastructure.
