Benin Startup Uses AI to Expand Access to Safe Drinking Water

A startup in Benin, SsAfe, is developing an artificial intelligence-powered innovation aimed at improving access to safe drinking water. Led by chemical engineer Marielle Agbahoungbata, the project focuses on an intelligent water-filtering robot called Watt Air, designed to analyze water quality and apply appropriate treatment based on detected pollutants. The system can adapt water processing for different uses, including drinking, irrigation, and household needs, while optimizing reagent use through AI-driven calculations. Presented at a conference supported by UNESCO in Paris, the innovation highlights Africa-focused technological solutions for essential services. Still in the prototype stage, the device is expected to become operational around 2027. It also includes a voice interface designed to support local African languages such as Fon, Bambara, Swahili, and Wolof, improving accessibility in rural communities. The project has received initial funding support and is seeking additional investment for large-scale deployment.
