Countries such as Malaysia and the Maldives are introducing AI laws and digital identity frameworks, while Singapore and New Zealand focus on scaling AI deployment through partnerships rather than building frontier models. At the same time, nations like Nepal and Bhutan warn of deeper structural risks—ranging from “data colonialism” and talent outflows to the erosion of cultural authenticity caused by globally trained AI systems. Together, these developments show a clear regional split between countries building sovereign AI ecosystems and those still reliant on foreign platforms, highlighting that the next phase of AI competition in Asia will be shaped less by innovation alone and more by control over data, infrastructure, and identity.
