At an AI conference in Sofia, Anthropic executive Patrick Dreisch argued that the future of software engineering will increasingly depend on “soft skills” such as adaptability, communication, and openness to experimentation, rather than only technical specialization. Speaking at the BASSCOM AI Conference 2026 in Sofia, Dreisch said the rapid evolution of AI tools is changing the role of developers from direct executors of code into supervisors of AI-driven processes. While dismissing fears that software engineers will disappear in the near future, he emphasized that professionals who actively learn and adapt to AI systems will be best positioned in the evolving labor market. His visit, organized by the Bulgarian Association of Software Companies, was also seen as an effort to strengthen Bulgaria’s visibility within the global AI ecosystem as Eastern European countries compete to attract talent, investment, and recognition in the sector.
