AI Raises Concerns Over Cultural Distortion in Bhutan

In Bhutan, experts and cultural institutions are warning that the rapid spread of artificial intelligence could distort traditional practices and weaken cultural authenticity if left unregulated. While AI tools are increasingly used to document heritage, promote the Dzongkha language, and preserve oral traditions, concerns are growing about inaccurate representations generated from global datasets that do not fully reflect Bhutanese culture. Officials from the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development say AI-generated content can misrepresent sacred symbols, traditional attire, and religious expressions, leading to cultural dilution. Scholars and artists also caution that misuse of traditional designs and music in AI systems could result in cultural appropriation and loss of authenticity. The Film Association of Bhutan has highlighted risks of job displacement and weakened storytelling traditions due to AI-generated media. Experts are now calling for clear regulations, stronger validation systems, and legal frameworks to ensure responsible use of AI while protecting Bhutan’s cultural identity in the digital era.
