Archaeologists working with the Pompeii Archaeological Park have used artificial intelligence to recreate the final moments of a man who died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. In collaboration with the University of Padua Digital Cultural Heritage Laboratory and the Ministry of Culture, researchers combined skeletal evidence and excavation data to digitally reconstruct a realistic scene of the victim fleeing through ash-filled streets while holding a terracotta bowl for protection. The project used AI imaging tools to generate a visual interpretation of the event, supported by artifacts such as a ceramic lamp, coins, and personal items found at the site. Officials say the reconstruction is not a definitive historical record but a scientifically informed hypothesis designed to make archaeological findings more accessible to the public.
