AI Farming Tools Give Tanzanian Farmers a New Edge

Tanzania is testing how artificial intelligence can improve farming through a mobile application called KilimoAI, designed to help farmers identify crop diseases using smartphones. Developed by computer scientist Dr. Neema Mduma and her research team, the app allows users to photograph crops and instantly receive diagnoses for diseases affecting maize, beans, bananas, and potatoes. Farmers in northern Tanzania say the technology helps them avoid unnecessary pesticide use, reduce costs, and improve harvests. The project has already reached more than 63,000 farmers and aims to expand to 400,000 users by 2030. Researchers continue refining the AI model with images collected directly from farms, improving accuracy over time.
