A new cybersecurity report highlights a sharp increase in AI-related data security incidents across Australia, driven by rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools in workplaces. The Proofpoint 2026 AI and Human Risk Landscape Report found that while most organisations have already deployed AI assistants beyond pilot stages, many lack confidence in their ability to detect compromised systems or prevent data leaks. Security professionals reported growing visibility gaps in AI agent activity, weak governance structures, and limited preparedness for emerging risks linked to autonomous AI systems. The report also warned that AI is not only introducing new threats but amplifying traditional vulnerabilities such as data mishandling and credential exposure, now executed at far greater speed and scale. Experts emphasized that incidents involving sensitive data exposure are likely to become more common unless organisations strengthen oversight, implement stricter controls, and improve monitoring of AI-driven actions. Overall, the findings suggest that security frameworks are struggling to keep pace with the rapid expansion of AI across critical business systems.
