AI “Chief of Staff” System Tested in Chinese Military Simulations Shows Faster-than-Human Battlefield Decisions

A recent report describes the Chinese military’s deployment of an artificial intelligence system designed to assist battalion-level commanders in real time decision-making during combat simulations. Developed by researchers linked to the People’s Liberation Army and the National University of Defence Technology, the AI acts as a “chief of staff” inside a command tent, integrating a large language model with a dynamic battlefield knowledge graph. Its role is to filter incoming information, identify critical gaps, and generate prioritized decision prompts under rapidly changing conditions. In simulated amphibious assault scenarios, the system significantly outperformed experienced human officers, reducing decision-making time by nearly half and improving the speed of the OODA (observe, orient, decide, act) loop by 43 percent. It also achieved over 90 percent accuracy in recalling key battlefield information even under communication disruption. The AI successfully identified tactical blind spots, such as missing enemy reserve positions, and recommended reconnaissance actions within seconds.
