Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape digital commerce across Latin America as financial institutions experiment with automated transaction systems. Santander and Visa recently completed a pilot project testing agentic commerce, a system in which AI agents can initiate and complete transactions on behalf of consumers. The experiment demonstrates how artificial-intelligence technologies could automate routine purchasing decisions while integrating with digital-payment infrastructure. Proponents say agentic commerce could make online shopping more efficient by allowing AI assistants to manage subscriptions, reorder goods and negotiate prices. However, the technology also raises important questions about security, consumer protection and data governance. Financial institutions are closely watching early experiments to determine whether AI-driven commerce systems can scale safely across global payment networks.
