Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced plans for a BRICS Open-Source Artificial Intelligence Zone as the bloc seeks stronger cooperation in technology, trade and innovation among emerging economies. Speaking at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Xi called for greater collaboration in artificial intelligence, including large language models, training systems and the development of an open artificial intelligence ecosystem. He said BRICS members should promote openness, cooperation and sharing in the sector. China is expected to take a leading role in establishing the new artificial intelligence initiative. Xi also encouraged BRICS countries to support innovation incubators, modernise traditional industries and develop emerging sectors that could contribute to future economic growth. The Chinese president further proposed cooperation between BRICS Special Economic Zones and announced that China would host a trade and investment forum next year when it assumes the group’s rotating presidency. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said solutions developed through BRICS should remain accessible to the wider Global South. He also highlighted concerns surrounding technology and critical minerals, while supporting stronger cooperation on global health and supply-chain resilience.
