Utah Faces Public Backlash Over Massive AI Data Center Approval Amid Environmental Concerns

Authorities in Utah have approved plans for one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence data center developments, despite widespread public opposition. The Stratos project will span more than 40,000 acres across Box Elder County and is expected to require enormous amounts of electricity and water to support its operations. Environmental groups warn the project could place additional pressure on the already fragile Great Salt Lake ecosystem, increase greenhouse gas emissions, and intensify local environmental challenges. Researchers have also raised concerns that the facility’s large-scale cooling systems may contribute to higher surrounding temperatures. Supporters, including investor Kevin O’Leary, argue the development will create thousands of jobs, strengthen artificial intelligence infrastructure, and enhance the country’s technological competitiveness. However, many local residents remain unconvinced and have launched efforts to challenge the approval through a public referendum, highlighting the growing debate over balancing economic development with environmental responsibility.
