South Korea Urges Meta to Apply Youth Protection Measures Globally

South Korea’s Korea Media and Communications Commission has called on Meta to apply stronger youth protection measures worldwide, saying social media companies should take greater responsibility for protecting children and teenagers online. The regulator’s comments follow Meta’s proposed changes to Facebook and Instagram, including limits on usage time, stronger age verification, restrictions on notifications, non-algorithmic feed options and hiding engagement metrics for younger users. The commission said measures targeting features that can encourage excessive use should ideally be extended to young users globally. South Korea is also considering tighter rules for minors, with seven legislative proposals pending in the National Assembly. The proposals include restricting social media access for children under 14 and limiting algorithms and other engagement features for teenagers aged 14 to 19. The regulator has been reviewing these measures amid growing concerns over screen time, recommendation systems and the online safety of young users.
