Papua New Guinea is accelerating its adoption of artificial intelligence, but senior officials are warning that safeguards and governance structures are not developing at the same pace. At the PNG Media Summit, Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Steven Matainaho cautioned that AI must be approached with a focus on responsibility and control, not just innovation, as the technology is already beginning to influence government and public decision-making. The government has released a draft AI adoption framework and a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at ensuring sovereign control, accountability, and public trust. These plans include proposals for an AI taskforce and a national legal framework to regulate the technology. Prime Minister James Marape has also indicated that AI will play a growing role in government operations, including recruitment, procurement, and policy development by 2026.
