OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs Back Slower Pace for AI Development

The chief executives of OpenAI and Anthropic have publicly backed a slower approach to developing increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems, citing concerns that technological progress is moving faster than the ability to develop effective safeguards. Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei called on artificial intelligence companies to deliberately slow the pace at which they improve their models. He argued that additional time would allow researchers to better understand advanced systems and develop measures to control potential risks. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman later endorsed Amodei’s position, saying that the industry needs to pace the development of frontier artificial intelligence. Altman also indicated that the issue has been a major focus of discussions at OpenAI in recent weeks. Amodei proposed independent evaluators inside major artificial intelligence companies, with access to models, tools and researchers to assess potential risks. He also called for stronger government regulation and eventually greater international coordination. The discussion follows concerns from researchers about autonomous artificial intelligence systems and the competitive pressure driving rapid development. Amodei said slowing progress would not mean stopping innovation, but could give researchers another one or two years to strengthen safeguards as artificial intelligence capabilities continue to advance.
