Latin America’s AI Future Hinges on Productivity Transformation

A joint research effort involving the World Economic Forum and McKinsey argues that artificial intelligence could become a major driver of productivity growth across Latin America if governments and businesses accelerate adoption. The region has historically struggled with low productivity growth, averaging roughly 0.4% annually over the past 25 years, one of the slowest rates globally. AI technologies could help close this gap by improving decision-making, optimizing supply chains and automating administrative processes across industries. However, the report warns that unlocking these gains will require substantial investment in digital infrastructure, data governance frameworks and workforce training. Without those investments, Latin America risks remaining largely a consumer of AI technologies developed elsewhere rather than a producer of innovation. The study outlines strategic priorities including strengthening regional research ecosystems, expanding computing infrastructure and integrating AI into public-sector services.
