Artificial intelligence and electricity infrastructure are becoming increasingly connected, with each influencing how the other develops. According to Divya Reddy and Kenneth Cheng of the World Economic Forum, artificial intelligence is changing how power systems are planned, managed and operated, while the availability and reliability of electricity are becoming critical factors in the expansion of artificial intelligence.
The growing demand for data centres is creating new pressure on electricity systems. Industrial facilities, commercial buildings and energy storage assets are also becoming more intelligent, using artificial intelligence to decide when to generate, store, consume or supply electricity. Lei Zhang, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Envision, said these systems are turning industrial facilities into autonomous energy managers. At the same time, power infrastructure is becoming a major condition for artificial intelligence deployment. Hithium is developing energy storage solutions designed to provide reliable and rapid power for artificial intelligence data centres. Dr. Nazar Yi said artificial intelligence is expanding faster than traditional power infrastructure can be built, increasing the need for fast-response and long-duration energy storage. Artificial intelligence is also expected to strengthen grid resilience by helping systems detect disruptions, respond to changing conditions and coordinate energy resources in real time. The World Economic Forum says future decisions involving artificial intelligence, energy storage, grid expansion and digital infrastructure will need to be planned together as power systems and intelligent technologies become increasingly interdependent.
