Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist widely known as the “Godfather of AI,” has called for a regulatory system that would require artificial intelligence companies to prove their models are safe before releasing them to the public. Speaking on the “Smart Girl Dumb Questions” podcast, Hinton compared AI regulation with the approval process used for medicines. He argued that companies should have to satisfy an independent regulator before putting advanced AI systems into use, similar to how pharmaceutical companies must demonstrate the safety of new drugs. Hinton’s comments come amid growing concerns about AI safety and the ability of increasingly capable models to operate within defined permissions and follow user instructions. He also pointed to the growing use of AI in developing and improving other AI systems, a process that could accelerate technological progress while creating additional safety challenges. The computer scientist warned that recursive self-improvement could make AI capabilities advance rapidly. While acknowledging that his timeline was only an estimate, Hinton said he believes the risks could become considerably more serious within the next year or two, strengthening his argument for stronger safeguards before advanced models are released.
