Fake Think Tank Used Artificial Intelligence Content Strategy to Influence Chatbot Responses

A website operating under the name of a think tank that reportedly does not exist as a legal entity published more than 124 reports containing over 560,000 words in just nine days, according to an analysis by The Guardian. The reports were designed around questions that users might ask artificial intelligence chatbots, with content structured to influence how automated systems present information. The website reportedly used an artificial intelligence focused content platform designed to improve the likelihood of websites being cited by systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. Researchers quoted in the report warned that the broader concern extends beyond chatbot search results. Content could potentially enter datasets used to train commercial artificial intelligence models, making narratives harder for users to trace back to their original sources. The case highlights growing concerns about attempts to influence artificial intelligence systems through large-scale, strategically produced online content.
