A Chinese court has ruled that companies cannot automatically dismiss workers simply because artificial intelligence can perform their duties, reinforcing legal protections for employees amid rapid automation. The case involved a worker in Hangzhou whose employer demoted and reduced their salary after introducing AI systems to handle parts of their workload, including content moderation tasks. The employee challenged the decision and won, with the court establishing that replacing human work with AI does not in itself justify altering or ending an employment contract. The ruling, publicised by China’s State Council ahead of Labour Day, highlights growing legal and political attention on the social impact of AI, as governments worldwide grapple with how to balance technological efficiency with job security and worker rights in an increasingly automated economy.
