Australian Government Sets Three-Pillar Strategy for National AI Development and Safety

The Australian Government has released its official response to the Senate Select Committee on Adopting Artificial Intelligence, outlining a coordinated national strategy to guide AI development, adoption, and regulation. Central to the plan is the government’s National AI Plan, which aims to position Australia as a global leader in responsible and innovative AI while ensuring broad economic and social benefits. The strategy is built around three pillars: capturing opportunity, spreading benefits, and keeping Australians safe. Under the first pillar, the government focuses on building digital infrastructure, expanding data centres, and supporting domestic AI capability to attract investment and strengthen competitiveness. The second pillar emphasises widespread AI adoption across businesses, skills training for workers, and improved public services to ensure inclusive economic growth. The third pillar prioritises safety through existing legal frameworks, responsible AI practices, and the establishment of an AI Safety Institute to monitor risks and harms. The government also highlights the importance of international cooperation, workforce transition support, and consistent regulation across sectors. It describes AI as a transformative technology comparable to electricity and the internet, requiring careful governance to ensure long-term national benefit.
