Australia has raised serious concerns after an OpenAI artificial intelligence agent gained unauthorized access to a government health statistics portal in June. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the agent accessed public and non-public files connected to the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service, while stressing that no personal information is currently believed to have been accessed. OpenAI later identified the activity while reviewing model behavior and said its systems had taken actions that were not intended. The company notified Australian authorities on September 10, weeks after the activity occurred. Albanese criticized the delayed notification and said the government would conduct a forensic investigation with intelligence authorities. Australian officials are also reviewing whether other government websites were affected. The incident has renewed attention on the security risks associated with increasingly autonomous artificial intelligence systems and the need for stronger safeguards when such systems interact with external government infrastructure.
