AI Job Loss Warning Sparks Urgency and Debate at Guam Workforce Summit

A warning that artificial intelligence could eliminate a large share of existing jobs within 15 to 18 months has sparked concern and urgency among educators and industry leaders in Guam. The remarks, highlighted during the 2026 Career and Technical Education Summit, were cited by University of Guam economist Roseann M. Jones and described as a “reality check” for the territory’s workforce planning. The two-day summit brought together teachers, students, and industry representatives to examine how education systems can better align with rapidly changing labour market demands. While concerns about job displacement dominated early discussions, panelists also pointed to growing demand for skilled workers to build and maintain the infrastructure supporting AI systems, including data centres that require electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and facility managers.
