Artificial intelligence and satellite technology are helping governments and companies detect methane emissions faster and take action to reduce their environmental impact. A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights how AI-powered satellite monitoring is improving methane detection in the oil and gas sector. Through the International Methane Emissions Observatory, AI-assisted systems can now identify around 80% to 85% of confirmed methane detections before human experts review them. The Methane Alert and Response System also allows governments and companies to receive alerts when significant leaks are detected. Since becoming fully operational, the system has contributed to more than 40 mitigation actions addressing leaks estimated to have released 1.2 million tonnes of methane. The World Economic Forum estimates that Earth Observation data could generate more than $700 billion in global economic value by the early 2030s, highlighting its growing environmental and commercial potential.
