China has launched the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO), a new international alliance aimed at strengthening global cooperation on artificial intelligence and supporting the development of common AI governance frameworks. The initiative was announced during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where President Xi Jinping called for greater international collaboration in advancing AI technologies. Headquartered in Shanghai, WAICO brings together 29 founding member countries, including Pakistan, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Senegal, and Russia. The organisation aims to promote the safe and responsible use of AI while encouraging knowledge sharing, capacity building, and regulatory cooperation among member nations. President Xi emphasized the importance of open collaboration, saying AI should benefit all countries and remain under human oversight through appropriate safeguards and governance. Analysts believe the new alliance could play an important role in shaping future global discussions on AI regulation, particularly through international forums, as countries work to establish common standards for the rapidly evolving technology.
