German Court Holds Companies Responsible for AI Chatbot Errors

A recent German court decision could shape the future of legal responsibility for artificial intelligence tools. On 12 May 2026, a German court ruled that companies are directly responsible for false information provided by their AI chatbots, even when the system was trained on correct data. The case involved a cosmetic treatment provider whose chatbot incorrectly claimed that two doctors held specialist qualifications that did not exist. Since consumers relied on the chatbot for information and appointment bookings, the court found the misleading statements could influence medical choices. A key issue in the case was whether the company could avoid responsibility by arguing that the chatbot acted independently. The court rejected this view, stating that the chatbot was not a separate third party and that the company remained accountable for the information it shared. The ruling follows a similar Canadian case in 2024 and may influence future decisions regarding liability for autonomous AI agents.
