Malawi to Launch First AI-Focused Data Center to Boost Local Computing Power

Malawi is set to establish its first AI-focused micro data center through a new initiative by local technology company Converged Technology Networks, aiming to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign-hosted digital infrastructure. The facility will be designed specifically for high-performance computing to support artificial intelligence workloads, using advanced NVIDIA A100 graphics processing units to handle large-scale data processing and machine learning tasks. According to the company, the project will improve processing speeds by keeping data within Malawi while also lowering costs for businesses, researchers, and public institutions that increasingly depend on AI technologies. The data center will operate under a GPU-as-a-service model, allowing users to rent computing power instead of investing in expensive hardware. In addition, the initiative is expected to support skills development through partnerships that will provide free GPU access to students, developers, and researchers, helping build local expertise in artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
